The main reason for muscle soreness after new or intense exercise is tiny tears in muscle fibers, especially from eccentric (lengthening) contractions. This causes swelling and pain, which is what we call Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). The body uses this process to repair and strengthen the muscle.
WHAT ABOUT LACTIC ACID?
Lactic acid is a byproduct of intense exercise. It helps the body make energy and get rid of fatigue. While too much lactic acid can make you tired for a while, it is not the main reason for muscle soreness. In fact, it may even help build muscle in some cases.
